You don't need a breeder to get a purebred dog or cat

Pure breed adoption is quickly becoming a preferred alternative to finding a local breeder.  Not only do you save a life by rescuing a dog or cat in need, you’re very likely to spend less money on adoption fees than a breeder’s sale price.
Did you know that 25% of pets in shelters and rescues are pure breed animals?  This is partially because of over-breeding, resulting in perfectly good animals either being released in to the wild or being dropped off at local shelters and rescues.  It’s a shame that not all breeders are responsible, but you can out help by adopting one and saving a life.  With 4 million pets being euthanized each year, we can all make a difference together.  It is not an issue of not having enough homes to adopt in to, it is an issue with an over-supply of animals.
If you’re open to the idea of adopting a purebred pet instead of going to a breeder, we also encourage you to consider adopting an adult or senior pet.  Depending on your situation, this may be a better choice.  Puppies and young dogs can be a handful.  Older pets are more likely to be settled down a little bit and are sometimes already housebroken.  Since so many people are looking for puppies, sometimes this group gets overlooked.  It doesn’t mean they’re bad, it just means they’re a little older.   They’ll love you just the same!

Finding the right breed is the first step in getting a new pet in to your home.  You need to take in to consideration everything from their energy level, age, barking, size, exercise requirements, your energy level, among many others.  We’ve got a few links to get you started.  If we don’t yet have information for the breed you are looking for, try tracking down a breed specific rescue to ask questions to. We’ve found that they are a better source of information than general Internet searches because they have the added level of understanding the adoption process and how it generally impacts the breed.
